Weekly Writing assignments can be found below the introduction or through the Assignments menu. They are due by Sunday night of the week they are assigned, but you can complete them at any point during that week. Check the calendar regularly to keep track of the due dates.
Most weeks will have a Weekly Writing assignment due by Sunday night. For each weekly writing assignment, follow the instructions in the specific assignment page. Some of these will require you to read a reading before responding. Others will ask you to think about writing, your discourse community, samples of writing or videos from your discourse community, or other class concepts before responding.
Submitting Assignments: The Weekly Writing assignments will be turned in on Canvas. See the Assignments section of our Canvas class.
Tone & Style: The majority of weekly writings are low-stakes and casual. This means that I'd like to just hear your thoughts, in your own writing voice. Don't worry about grammar or "sounding academic".
Formatting: Put your name and the assignment name at the top of all Weekly Writing assignments (for example, Weekly Writing 1). This helps me see that you submitted the right assignment if anything seems off about the submission.
Outside research: We will not be using secondary research beyond the assigned readings in this class. Please limit the information included and referred to in your weekly writings to the readings, primary research (such as your observations or analysis of writing samples from your discourse community), and your own ideas based on the class concepts, readings, etc. Do not do or use additional research for these assignments.
AI use: Do not use AI for these weekly writing assignments.
These assignments help you prepare to write/create your major assignments in the class, so it's really important to work through the ideas on your own first. Additionally, I can't give you useful feedback if your ideas and writing have been filtered through AI first.
There will be ways to use AI in later stages of the writing process for those interested.
Translation Apps/Sites: If English is not your first language, you may use a translation app for individual words or phrases. Do not use these tools to translate entire paragraphs and/or pages. This often causes similar issues as AI and makes it difficult for me to give you writing feedback.
