Similar to last week, you will be choosing one communication event (i.e. a post, video, written comment, etc.) from your community and answering some questions about it. This is not an essay assignment, so these answers can be listed.
For more information about the Weekly Writing assignments, see the Weekly Writing Overview page.
Pick one message/communication from your community. This could be a video post, a written post, a comment/reply, or something else.
Link to the post (public communities only) OR screenshot the post/comment/etc. Double-check that your link works before turning in the assignment. To link to your community, just copy and paste the URL from your browser into the document.
For any screenshots, blur out/black out all identifying information from the post (such as the person's user name/name and photo).
This is especially important for closed/private communities, such as a Discord server or a private Facebook group.
Please check the group's rules about screenshots also. If you should not take a screenshot based on group rules, you can either ask permission or copy and paste the text from a post or comment.
Save / paste the screenshot or link into your Word document.
Answer the following questions below the screenshot:
What community is this from?
What is the genre of your communcation event?
For example: TikTok video, YouTube video, Discord message, Reddit post, etc...
If you needed to get more specific, what would you call it?
For example: GymTok instructional video, tutorial video, review video, Game Review post, POV video, Getting Ready With Me video, etc...
If your genre is something like a comments section or general Discord chat, you might not be able to get more specific--just note that, if that's the case.
What are some things you notice about how this post/message is written or created? Think about the rhetorical moves being made instead of the content.
Some possible things to think about: camera angles or positioning, music (is there music? If so, what kind?), color choice, casual vs. formal tone, formatting of text, captions, included images, emoji use, organization of information, etc.
Are the things you noticed above common in these types of posts/messages in your community? Are most posts/communications like this or different? In what ways?
