Project 1 includes the following assignments:
Genre Analysis Essay Rough Draft
Peer Review
Genre Analysis Essay Revised Draft
Self-Evaluation and Reflection
See below for the requirements of each assignment.
The Genre Analysis Essay rough draft will be the draft that you use for Peer Review. The genre analysis draft must cover the topics outlined in the Genre Analysis Essay assignment page and be at least 80% complete to participate in peer review or receive credit for getting feedback from a tutor.
Requirements
Be at least 80% complete (at least 1000 words); the eventual requirement is 1300 words minimum.
Cover the prompts listed on the Genre Analysis Essay assignment page.
Recommended: Attempt to fulfill all requirements listed on the assignment sheet.
Required Submission: Submit your Rough Draft to Canvas before the Peer Review class. Draft must be at least 80% complete to participate in Peer Review (i.e. at least 1000 words, not including Works Cited).
Alternate Submission: Submit your Rough Draft to Canvas and meet with a tutor in the Academic Success Center (ACS) to replace that part of the assignment. See Instructions for ACS Feedback for important info.
As part of the Project 1 submission, you are required to participate in Peer Review with your teammates in class. If you are unable to make it to class that day or participate in peer review on the scheduled date, you may get feedback from a writing tutor at the Academic Success Center (ASC).
Requirements: Participate in peer review (in-class or online, depending on your class format) or get feedback from tutor.
Required Submission: Complete peer review on Canvas. See the In-Class Peer Review for Project 1 page for more information.
Alternate Submission: If you are not able to participate in Peer Review during class, you will need to submit the feedback or proof of visit to the Academic Success Center. When you create an appointment with the ASC, explain that you are looking for peer review feedback that focuses on high and middle-order concerns.
Your draft must be effectively revised after you receive feedback from Peer Review (or the ACS tutor). This revision should primarily focus on high and middle order concerns, such as organization, flow, transitions, use of evidence, paragraph development, etc. While proofreading (i.e. fixing typos and mechanics) is appreciated, that alone will not fulfill the revision requirement.
The revised draft must also meet all other requirements for the paper, which are listed on this assignment sheet, such as word count requirements, citations, formatting, using evidence, and covering the required topics.
Requirements
Length: 1300-1600 words (~5-7 pages) not including the Works Cited page.
Format: MLA Style
Address the required prompts/topics listed under the "Assignment Prompt" section on the Genre Analysis Essay assignment page.
Use at least three writing/video samples from your community to support your points. Include direct quotes and/or screenshots (for visual conventions) as support.
For shorter genres, such as Discord messages, I recommend using a series of messages from three separate conversations.
Support your claims throughout your paper using either your genre samples or specific details from your observations in your community.
Use more than one sample/example to support each convention since you are trying to show a trend.
Include in-text citations (i.e. clearly state the username/name of the creator of the post/message that you are analyzing).
Include a Works Cited page (MLA Style) with links/references to your samples. See the Works Cited page for more information.
A detailed AI Statement of Use is required at the end of your paper if you used GenAI in any capacity. See additional requirements below.
Required Submission: Submit your Revised Draft to the Project 1 assignment in Canvas as a Word document (.doc or .docx file).
✓+ (3/3): All above requirements are met.
✓ (2/3): Missing one of the above requirements.
✓- (1/3): Missing two or three of the above requirements and/or the paper is substantially under the word count requirement.
No Credit (0/3): Missing four or more of the above requirements.
Note: Assignments that are missing major criteria will be graded accordingly. For example, if the paper is significantly off-topic, incomplete, and/or substantially under the word count may result in a no credit grade.
For this project, you will also complete a reflection and self-evaluation form to reflect on your writing process and evaluate your work. Complete this assignment once you have completed your revised draft.
Requirements: The requirements for the self-evaluation and reflection are located on the form.
Required Submission: Submit your completed form to Canvas. See the Self-Evaluation and Reflection assignment on Canvas for further instructions.
This assignment will have several steps and due dates:
Choose a genre in your online discourse community to analyze.
This paper requires you to cover several prompts, analyze a genre, and use evidence from at least three genre samples in your analysis. In order to be prepared to write your paper, you'll need to do some planning before you get started.
I recommend the following planning and pre-writing as a minimum:
Choose your genre samples (make sure to stick to one style of genre; see "Pick Your Genre" above)
Plan the sub-topics of your paper (i.e. what point are you going to make in each paragraph?) Remember this is a 5-7 page paper, you will likely need roughly 7-10 paragraphs.
Plan which evidence from your genre samples you will use to support each of your main points. (
Note: We will work on these steps in class also.
You may also want to do other forms of pre-writing such as brainstorming, listing, freewriting, etc. to help you prepare to write your first draft.
The rough draft is due one week before the final Project 1 submission. You will participate in a peer review with your team in class to get feedback on your rough draft.
As part of the Project 1 submission, you are required to participate in Peer Review with your teammates in class. If you are unable to make it to class that day or participate in peer review on the scheduled date, you may get feedback from a writing tutor at the Academic Success Center (ASC).
Once you have received feedback from Peer Review (or the ACS tutor), you will then revise your draft. This revision should primarily focus on high and middle order concerns, such as organization, flow, transitions, use of evidence, paragraph development, etc. While proofreading (i.e. fixing typos and mechanics) is appreciated, that alone will not fulfill the revision requirement.
For this project, you will also complete a reflection and self-evaluation form to reflect on your writing process and evaluate your work. Complete this assignment once you have completed your revised draft.
