For more information about these assignments, see the Weekly Writing Overview page.
For this first Weekly Writing assignment, you will write a short essay exploring your interests and the online communities in which you currently participate or have an interest.
Use the following prompts to explore your existing discourse communities in a short essay:
What are your hobbies? Do you participate in any online communities around your hobbies? What other online communities do you belong to or participate in? How do you participate in these communities (i.e. such as creating content, commenting on posts, watching content, etc.)?
Note: do not list these prompts and reply to each one individually; use these as a starting place to explore ideas around online communities that you belong to.
The following are examples of online discourse communities: Discord server for gaming or a particular game, a TikTok community (like GamerTok, BookTok, Fashion TikTok/fashionTok, or similar), a Facebook group for knitters, a Reddit community/subreddit, a Twitter/X community (like BlackTwitter, ScienceTwitter), an Instagram community (like Dogs of Instagram).
This list is not exhaustive; it's meant to give you some ideas to get started.
